That is why he does not paint from his own observation. Travelling through nature and visiting gardens provides him with a source of inspiration for his studio. There, he paints his suggestions of trees, branches and flowers. With van Spaendonck, it’s all about the intensity of the paint and the materials surrounding him. Paint and textiles are subjects in themselves. It is well known that accidental stains and splashes on todies, jeans and painter’s canvas can become part of a work. That is how he has been passionately working on his visual expressions for years. Always with plenty of room for coincidence. The daily walk to his studio is ‘part’ of the search for the challenges with paint, with the canvas, but also with the spontaneous occurrences and hunches. An accidental stain on a pair of trousers, the remains of paint on a cleaning cloth; to him, these are just as great challenges as a tautly stretched white canvas.
